Healthy Eating Habits for Moms - Food Is Fuel for Breastfeeding
Most days, your mind is probably jammed packed with things to do. It's easy to see how eating right can get lost in the shuffle. Now that you're breastfeeding your baby, good nutrition needs to become a daily priority, but not necessarily for the reason you might think.
"Your food won't affect the quality of the milk you produce, but it will affect how YOU feel," says Jana McCarthy, a certified lactation consultant in Lake Forest, California.
That might strike some women as odd. There are so many old wives tales about eating and breastfeeding that it's hard to sort through and find the facts.
McCarthy asserts that diet is important. "What you eat fuels your body," she says. "Since your body has worked hard to produce this baby and then feed him or her, you need to eat nutritious food to take care of yourself."
McCarthy explains that your basic diet should consist of proteins, carbohydrates, and no more than 30 percent fat. In those early weeks of your baby's life, convenience is as important as good nutrition. McCarthy adds that there are plenty of good quality frozen foods available at your local grocery store. Reading labels will help you determine the protein, carbohydrate, fat, and vitamin content of these meals.
When Lisa Kaufman of Toney, Alabama, was breastfeeding, she altered her eating habits to include more nutritious items. One of the bigger changes was introducing more water into her diet. "Water is probably the best thirst quencher," McCarthy says. She adds that you should drink whenever you are thirsty.
Breastfeeding Supplies - What Do You Really Need to Breastfeed Successfully?
However, Curtis, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and administrator of Breastfeeding Online is quick to add that, if you have the money, other products can be very nice. Although when she was nursing she never felt the need for any special nursing products, she does admit that she recommends a book, The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers by Dr. Jack Newman, to all her new mothers.
"I've seen the growth in the market of products for breastfeeding moms, and all I can tell my clients is if they like it and it works for them and they can afford it?great," says Curtis.
What about the breastfeeding support pillows you will find at most large retailers? "There are different kinds of nursing pillows," says Curtis. "I think the comfort level depends upon where you nurse the baby and how you're built." Many mothers may do just as well to pile pillows around them or sit in a chair with higher, padded arms. Curtis's concern when talking about products for breastfeeding is that breastfeeding might be seen as too complicated or expensive for the average mother.

Breastfeeding During Pregnancy - It Can Be Done!

For many women, becoming pregnant while breastfeeding can come as a surprise. Some do not plan the pregnancy, while others assume a pregnancy is unlikely or even impossible while breastfeeding a child. As you hold your nursing child to your breast, you may think a new pregnancy will be difficult for everyone. As you care for one baby, how can you be growing another?
And yet, many women plan a pregnancy to ensure their children are close together. While breastfeeding can interfere with ovulation, it's an unlikely birth control for mothers who are nursing older babies.
"Breastfeeding is such a special time of closeness that it is unimaginable for some mothers to consider ending the relationship before the baby is ready, even if that means nursing through a pregnancy and subsequently nursing two babies together," says Ann Calandro, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) from North Carolina.
Throughout much of the world, especially in less "developed" countries, nursing while pregnant is common. In the US, it is important to understand that there are more misconceptions about breastfeeding during pregnancy that there are actual facts.
A woman can value her breastfeeding relationship with her child, and still ensure the well being of her new child growing inside. With some basic education and information for both the physician and pregnant woman, breastfeeding during pregnancy is almost always safe.
